So here is my dilemma: Where should we go? We have a tendency to visit the same locations over and over. So I need some new ideas.
Tell me where a family of 3 (2 adults and a 12 year old) would have fun together. Here are the main places we have traveled extensively:
- Washington DC
- California
- Florida
- New Orleans
- Las Vegas
So please help us come up with a new exciting place for our family vacation this year. (Time frame not a big problem - just sometime before December). We'll even bring you back a souvenir if we choose your location.

I highly recommend Portland and coastal Oregon, off-season. Anytime, really, but after the end of summer is so nice, and you have the place more to yourself. If you do go there, and you like Middle Eastern food, I have a great recommendation for eats while you're in Portland.
I've heard the Carolinas are amazing.
What Geo said. I hail from there and love it so. No one I know who has ever been regretted it. I'd fly to Portland then rent a car and drive down the coast.
NYC in the fall. Maybe some Christmas shopping.
You're welcome.
I didn't see Hawaii up there... so I'm throwing it in. We love going in Sept/Oct - the weather is perfect and the crowds have died down. Also - if you choose to rent a condo or house - you get the better rates. Check out vrbo.com
If you go to Oahu - I recommend Kuilima condos on the North Shore. You are 20 min from Laie (BYU/Temple/PCC) and right there by Turtle Bay where the sand is lovely. The bay is calm. You're also close to Haliewa - a cute town with famous shaved ice. Also while there try the shrimp trucks - Mackey's is the BEST. The restaurant at the Turtle Bay Golf Club is YUMMMMMM. You can also stay in Waikiki for a few days - it's nice to experience it. Also - Hanauma Bay is fun...
Maui - we like Kapalua. Although Lahaina and Wailea are nice too. As a high schooler we stayed in Kihei - it was ... alright. Great food in Lahaina...and in Kapalua the Ritz restaurants are also delish.
HAVE FUN!
I vote for Seattle. Or Hawaii. San Antonio is actually a SUPER cool city, with a Sea World, gorgeous temple and killer shopping. I now vote for San Antonio.
I agree with Seattle and San Antonio. I'm really partial to Chicago, though. It is a gorgeous city, great food, lots of walking along Lake Michigan, amazing museums. Definitely Chicago!
Hhhhmmmm....San Antonio IS a neat place! Also NY in the Fall...Great Ideas!!
Or Boston. LOVE Boston.
Or Busti. You know you want some tummys.
Chicago! There is tons to do, and great food to eat. If you go in the fall, you can hit an authentic pumpkin farm.
2.5 hours north is wisconsin dells-- home to the worlds largest indoor/outdoor water parks. The Dells is awesome, and there is a ton to do there too (you can fly into madison wi)That is my kids very favorite place to go-- the dells. you won't be sorry.
those are my votes. Chicago or Wisconsin Dells
If it were me, my husband, and 12-year-old child, I'd head straight for Ocracoke Island, off North Carolina. It's supposed to be amazing! Also, I hear Austin is a pretty cool place to visit, but I might be a little biased. Good luck!
How about Vermont in the fall? My husband and I did that trip once. The colors are amazing. And there is so much to do!
We just had the best time in West Yellowstone. You know, because you love to camp and all.
Niagra Falls is Amazing - if you've never been I highly recommend it.
The same with the Grand Canyon - the Sedona area of AZ is great too. Some unique things there (Slide Rock is a ton of fun).
Charlotte, NC or the coast of NC (watch out fo hurricane season if you head to the coast). There is a great atmosphere here.
Williamsburg, VA offers lots of history and 2 major theme parks and museums.
Chicago offers lots for a big city visit. Boston would be cool too (I'm partial to history)
So many choices!
